Liberals Shouldn’t Worry

Posted by Eric at 5:24 pm. Filed under: General

Gun Toting Liberal has some interesting thoughts on Bush’s appointments to the SCOTUS.

I don’t think it matters much at all who the President appoints. Why? I have this little theory that judges in general have a tendency to become more “liberal” over the years due to their presiding over many cases, year after year; watching injustice after injustice being inflicted against the “common man” by those with money, power, or both, inside of the so-called “halls of justice”. I submit to you the fact that most of today’s SCOTUS Justices were appointed by Republicans, including both Justices Stevens and Ginsburg; often considered to be (by many) the most “liberal” Justices on the Supreme Court today.

So, my fellow Libs, do not fear these appointments.

Does Al-Qaida Have Nukes in the U.S.

Posted by Eric at 4:16 pm. Filed under: General

Joe Farah thinks so:

Al-Qaida not only has nuclear weapons – lots of them – but the terrorist organization has used the lax U.S.-Mexico border security to smuggle them and their sleeper agents into this country for the purpose of killing millions of Americans, destroying the U.S. economy and, in effect, winning its war against the West.

This is perhaps the most dire column I have ever written. It gives me no pleasure to write it. But I feel I must share this disturbing news because no one else is sharing it with you.

I don’t know how much time we have to act. But I know time is short. I don’t know whether this disaster will occur tomorrow, a year from now or a decade from now. According to U.S. officials, it’s not a question of “if,” but “when.”

More here:

But the most disturbing news is that high level U.S. officials now believe at least some of those weapons have been smuggled into the U.S. for use in the near future in major cities as part of this “American Hiroshima” plan, according to an upcoming book, “The al-Qaida Connection: International Terrorism, Organized Crime and the Coming Apocalypse,” by Paul L. Williams, a former FBI consultant

Paranoia? Or something to prepare for?

Paul Begala’s Memory Hypocrisy Problem

Posted by Eric at 2:26 pm. Filed under: General

Paul Begala on the Whitehouse’ political problem with Rove:

“people are going to look at this crowd and say, Gee, we can’t trust a thing they say after the WMD (weapons of mass destruction) controversy.’ ”

This whole “Bush lied about WMD’s” thing is getting tiresome. I wonder if Begala recalls any of these quotes, and if he trusts anything they say now.

BBC Tries Not to Offend Terrorists

Posted by Eric at 9:12 am. Filed under: General

Oh my. The BBC wants to make sure it doesn’t offend bombers who might not be terrorists.

Early reporting of the attacks on the BBC’s website spoke of terrorists but the same coverage was changed to describe the attackers simply as “bombers”.

The BBC’s guidelines state that its credibility is undermined by the “careless use of words which carry emotional or value judgments”.

Consequently, “the word ‘terrorist’ itself can be a barrier rather than an aid to understanding” and its use should be “avoided”, the guidelines say.

Bill Richardson and the Wen Ho Lee Leak

Posted by Eric at 8:54 am. Filed under: General

This “Bill Richardson leaked Wen Ho Lee’s name” thing is starting to come back to the surface, with the recent SCOTUS ruling on the appeal of Judith Miller and Matt Cooper.

SANTA FE - Gov. Bill Richardson could play a prominent role in the lawsuit filed by former Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist Wen Ho Lee against the federal government.

Lee claims government officials leaked classified and personal information about him to the media. Richardson was secretary of the Department of Energy at the time.

After The Santa Fe New Mexican covered the story on Thursday, The Albuquerque Journal reported in Sunday editions that Richardson and several others were again identified in a recent federal court ruling as likely sources for the leaks in 1999 that identified Lee as a suspect in an FBI investigation into the loss of nuclear secrets to China.

The governor has denied in sworn testimony that he was the source.

Since Richardson has been named as a possible contender in ‘08, if there is any truth to it, this story may grow and become relevant to the national political scene.

Steve Terrel has a good summary (via Julia Goldberg). Kilmer has a few comments too.
