David Rozelle’s Back in Action

Posted by Eric at 2:20 pm. Filed under: General

I’ve not read this book, but I heard David Rozelle on Laura Ingraham’s radio show today (the first time I’ve ever heard her). He seems like quite a guy.

Rozelle is the first amputee to return to the same battlefield.

“Every now and again,” says Rozelle, “I would get the standard, ‘That is horrible. How do you feel about the war?’” The fearless captain would respond: “How do you feel about your freedom? If you aren’t willing to die for it, then you aren’t American.”

“Michelle the army spouse” disagrees with the categorization of him as an “amputee.”

I have to say, though, that I disagree on their characterization of these men as “amputees.” Yes, that is one facet of who they are now, but more importantly, they are soldiers, and they are an inspiration.

Veteran Eric was similary inspired by the story.

[8/3/2005 Update: Baby Susan has been born!!]

[7/21/2005 Update Here]

If you haven’t seen Susan Torres’ story, check it out.

Wild Wisconsin says “What an example!”

Jeremy summarizes.

Justin Torres, the borther of Jason, Susan’s husband, has written an article worth reading.

In this midst of this tragedy and the grief that lingers like a context, like a fog, over every conversation and meal and moment in the hospital, we have hope. Doctors believe that they may be able to save this baby, keeping Susan alive long enough to deliver the child prematurely. It is no more than a fighting chance, far less than a certainty, that the baby will live. But we have hope. Keeping this baby alive is Susan’s last act of love, one that has been tremendously moving to watch even as it makes you question everything you thought you knew about the fundamental justice of the world.

Truth and Action, Frank J, Michelle Malkin and others are encouraging you to donate to help with the costs of keeping her body functioning to save this baby.

Pink Flamingo’s heart goes out from her personal experience.

I certainly can relate to the premature infant in the NICU for a long time thing. But I have the benefit of a wonderful wife. Jason’s the real hero in this story.

Dave Lucas thinks the plug should be pulled, saying that the life inside of her is not worth the money.

Why keep Susan alive any longer? Why foot a 400-thousand dollar medical bill for all of this? If the couple didn’t already have a child, I would understand. But they do.

Voice Potential has an interesting statistic (though he doesn’t source it, that I can find).

According to statistics, 9 comatose women have given birth to children in the United States. And if all goes well, Susan Torres will be the tenth.
