Army Tries New Recruiting Tactic

Posted by Eric at 9:45 pm. Filed under: General

Scott Ott:

The United States Army, which has missed its recruiting goals in each of the past four months, despite increasing financial incentives, today held a news conference to announce a new recruiting gimmick which it called “duty.”

At a Pentagon briefing, an unnamed Army spokesman said that, historically, this little-known concept has motivated more citizens to rise to America’s defense than money, prestige or promises of college education.

Journalists at the news conference, baffled by the terminology, unleashed a barrage of questions about why anyone would volunteer to fight for a country that runs a gulag at Gitmo, invades peaceful sovereign nations like Iraq and has no respect for the most Holy Koran.

Read the rest of the Scrappleface post. Scott sure knows how to make a point with satire.

And Fangbeer’s response to the Mudville Gazette’s posting of Ott’s commentary is worth reading.

Owens v. Pawlenty

Posted by Eric at 9:30 pm. Filed under: General

Minnesota and Colorado have a couple of cut-ups as governors. Check out the “your quarter is ugly” back and forth between these guys.

Colorado Gov. Bill Owens:

“I think Minnesota left something to be desired,” he told a number of reporters at the State Capitol. “It has lakes and canoes and big mosquitoes on it.”

Later, in a separate interview, Owens went further calling the mosquito the “Minnesota state bird,” and saying “Pawlenty’s a close friend of mine and I enjoy giving him grief. Would you ask him, what’s going on with his quarter? That’s one ugly quarter.”

“When Pawlenty comes on, tell him his quarter is an example of what not to do with a quarter.”

But Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty retorted:

“We are undertaking an investigation because I think there’s some subliminal messaging in these mountain peaks depicting Governor Owens in the buff and so we’re concerned about that and it’s something that I think is going to be a revelation in the great state of Colorado.”

Now that’s funny. Particularly when you see the Colorado quarter.

Way to Go, Mr. Pence!

I’m proud to have Mike Pence as my representative.

Tempers flared when Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., accused Amnesty International of endangering the lives of Americans in uniform by referring to the prison at Guantanamo Bay as a “gulag.”
