John Titor a No Show at MIT

Posted by Eric at 9:44 am. Filed under: General

To the great surprise of attendees, MIT’s Time Traveler Convention did not yield any time travelling guests.

But when attendees gathered outside for a raucous countdown at 10 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, nothing appeared on the makeshift landing pad at the coordinates Dorai set for the time travelers.

It’s actually a blessing that no one from the future showed up on Saturday night, said David Batchelor, the NASA physicist who wrote “The Science of Star Trek.”

Speaking on his own behalf and not for NASA in a phone interview, Batchelor noted the same potential risks mentioned by speakers at the convention, such as the displacement of matter in a finite universe caused by the introduction of someone from another time. He also touched on the paradoxes arising from such acts as going back in time and killing one’s own ancestors.

“We should breathe a sigh of relief,” said Batchelor, who considered his decision not to go to the convention a safe bet. “It means we were protected from the chaos that would result if someone came back and changed something.”

They were hoping John Titor would show up.

FireFox security hole

Posted by Eric at 9:37 am. Filed under: General

Since a huge percentage of blog readers user Firefox (according to my anecdotal numbers, a lot more than the general population), you may want to check out the rumor (exaggeration?) of a FireFox security hole.

UPDATE: It’s not just speculation. Here’s a story from TechWorld.

Firefox has unpatched “extremely critical” security holes and exploit code is already circulating on the Net, security researchers have warned.

The two unpatched flaws in the Mozilla browser could allow an attacker to take control of your system.

A patch is expected shortly, but in the meantime users can protect themselves by switching off JavaScript. In addition, the Mozilla Foundation has now made the flaws effectively impossible to exploit by changes to the server-side download mechanism on the update.mozilla.org and addons.mozilla.org sites, according to security experts.

Isabel Gottlieb’s Graduation Fiasco

Posted by Eric at 9:34 am. Filed under: General

Bow High School, in New Hampshire, will not let Miss Gottlieb graduate, because she the varsity athlete is shy one gym class credit. They suggested she drop A.P. Biology or Calculus so she could fulfill the P.E. requirement.

Though Isabel Gottlieb is a good student, a trumpet player in the school band and holds varsity letters in three sports, she discovered last fall she was one gym class shy of having enough credits to graduate next month.

She asked for a waiver, but the school wouldn’t budge, telling her instead she had to drop a class to take gym.

“Why would I drop an AP biology class to take P.E.?” the 18-year-old said. “It’s just not on my priority list.”
