Dead Rat? Just Paint Over It.

Posted by Eric at 9:32 am. Filed under: General

Grossest. Restaurant. Story. Ever.

Gold Coast City Council health inspectors who raided Jo’s Brasserie last August photographed the rat, covered in thick red paint to match the floor under the main food servery.

A massive fungus growth crawling with cockroaches was found nearby under the servery, along with heavily rusted stoves and food preparation areas.

Other rodents, both living and dead, were spotted by inspectors and rat faeces was littered across the kitchen.

The inspectors had acted on complaints from customers and staff, who alleged meals had been scooped out of rubbish bins and re-served.

Another customer cut into a fish, only to find it had not been gutted and cleaned. So horrified were they by the discovery, they took the plate home and froze it as evidence.

Lucy Kibaki Takes On the Press On World Press Freedom Day

Posted by Eric at 9:29 am. Filed under: General

Irony of the day from the first lady of Kenya:

World Press Freedom Day? Not if you ask the Kenyan president’s wife, who stormed into the newsroom of the nation’s largest newspaper early Tuesday and demanded the arrest of journalists for what she considers biased coverage. One cameraman said she slapped him.

Lucy Kibaki, wife of President Mwai Kibaki, arrived with her bodyguards and ordered her security men, who are police officers, to prevent anyone from leaving the newsroom and to confiscate the reporters’ mobile telephones, according to an account in Tuesday’s late edition of the Nation.

Illegal Immigrants Charged with Trespassing

Posted by Eric at 8:55 am. Filed under: General

Check out this novel approach to the problem of illegal immigration from New Ipswich (N.H.) Police Chief W. Garrett Chamberlain - Charge them with criminal trespassing.

New Ipswich Police Chief W. Garrett Chamberlain charged Ramirez with criminal trespassing — a violation comparable to a traffic ticket — on April 15 after immigration officials refused to take him into custody. Ramirez, who also pleaded guilty to operating without a valid license, has until Friday afternoon to report to immigration authorities in Manchester.

The statute says a person is guilty of criminal trespassing if, “knowing that he is not licensed or privileged to do so, he enters or remains in any place.”

“What I’m trying to do is find a manner in which we can get the federal government to step up to the plate and start helping out here,” Chamberlain said. “It’s basically a situation here where right now if you make it past the border patrol, you’re free and clear. There’s no interior enforcement for illegal immigration in the United States. What I’m hoping to do is find a way that if the feds aren’t going to help us out, then local enforcement can take care of it.”

Here’s a great quote:

Paula Grenier, a spokeswoman for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement in New England, said when the agency officially gets information on Ramirez, “we intend to write him up and put him into removal proceedings.”

But the fact is, she said, this case is about one illegal immigrant whose only crime was being broken down on the side of the road.

The spokesperson for ICENE has quite a way with words. “Illegal immigrant” by definition means that they committed the crime of immigrating illegally, and yet she says his “only crime was being broken down on the side of the road.” It seems to me that I’m restating the obvious, but apparently it needs to be restated, since the AP writer apparently didn’t catch the irony.

Cancer Screenings Lead to Overdiagnosis

Posted by Eric at 7:30 am. Filed under: General

I’ve seen a few articles about this subject recently. Here’s one from Wired News today.

Counterintuitive as it may sound, it’s sometimes better not to find out about cancer, the researchers said. Some cancers are likely to resolve themselves without treatment, and some patients may be likely to die of another ailment before cancer becomes an issue. A third reason for patients to be wary of cancer screenings is that the risk of false positives seems to increase with more screenings.

A 3rd Oklahoma City Bomber?

Posted by Eric at 7:03 am. Filed under: General

Terry Nichols Says a 3rd Man Took Part in Plot:

Nichols, in a letter written from his cell at the U.S. government’s Supermax prison in Colorado, said Arkansas gun collector Roger Moore donated so-called binary explosives, made up of two components, to bomber Timothy J. McVeigh that were used in Oklahoma City, as well as additional bomb components that recently were found in Nichols’ former home in Kansas.

His accusation came in a letter dated April 18, the day before the 10-year anniversary of the federal building bombing that killed 168 people.

According the Times, Nichols said FBI tests of bomb components found about a month ago at his home in Herington, Kan., would support his claim that they came from Moore and Moore’s girlfriend, Karen Anderson.

“That case of nitromethane came directly from Roger Moore’s Royal, Arkansas, home, and his prints should be found on that box and/or tubes, and Karen Anderson’s prints may be there as well,” Nichols wrote.

I had no idea that they just found (a decade later!) bomb components in Terry’s crawl space.
