Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany

The new Pope has been selected.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany has been elected pope to lead the Roman Catholic Church, a cardinal announced on Tuesday.

He has chosen Pope Benedict XVI as his papal name, the cardinal said.

It’s amazing. Minutes after his selection, Wikipedia has him listed as the pope. “I remember when I was a kid” we were lucky to have a set of encyclopedias updated every three years in our small town library. And now… seconds.

Benedict XVI, né Joseph Ratzinger (born April 16, 1927) is Pope of the Roman Catholic Church since April 19, 2005.

Ratzinger speaks ten languages and has received seven honorary doctorate degrees. He is an accomplished pianist with a preference for Beethoven.

He is the eighth German pope.
