Zogby’s Schiavo Poll

Posted by Eric at 8:29 am. Filed under: General

There’s lots of buzz over the weekend on the Zogby Schiavo poll in contrast to the skewed polls released a week or so ago.

The new question:

“If a disabled person is not terminally ill, not in a coma, and not being kept alive on life support, and they have no written directive, should or should they not be denied food and water?”

David Limbaugh:

Well, now Zogby releases a poll, after Terri’s death, after having asked the right questions and determined that 79% of the respondents said Terri should not have her food and water taken away and only 9% said she should.

Others commenting include Blue State Conservatives, Ankle Biting Pundits, Michelle Malkin, Blather Review, Bookworm Review, and Willisms, who says:

People want to believe in the courts, that they are objective and fair, that they follow the rule of law. People did not realize the facts were not scrutinized in any of the last-minute cases, only the legalistic jargon.

  1. Judge Greer is in contempt of Congress. Whatever we are Liberal, Conservative, Green, or Red, it is wrong!
Congress must act on this or the powers of Congress are going to not be taken seriously…Judge Greer was to look at the facts of the case anew! He did not. What are we sending these people to Washington for ? If they are not going to work for justice for all?

  2. I blame the Supreme Court.

What is the point of having conservative Justices if they are not going to give us the results we want? Even Scalia was against doing the right thing.

Just following the law is not enough. What is the point of being in control if we do not have the power to force the evil ones to conform to our will?

  3. Democrats wanted Terri dead. They thought the public opinion, as per the infamous ABC poll was with them - “Die Terri, Die!”

Now we know the truth from the new Zogby poll. Overwhelming majority of Americans would have wanted Terri to live. So, what do Democrats do now?
They want to MOVE ON! Forget all about it. She is dead anyhow, so what’s the point writing about her?

As to the expertise and judgment of Judge Greer. Here is and excerpt from his ruling of March 26, where he evaluates Terri’s ability to express her wish, to communicate with others:

    >>> “However, all of the credible medical evidence this Court has received over the last five years is that this is not a cognitive response but rather something akin to a person jerking his/her hand off a hot stove long before he/she has thought about it.”

  4. End of Greer’s quote.

Based on this conclusion, Greer finally condemned Terri to death. Isn’t this a stupid reasoning? Is this judge normal? I think he is a nut. I do not see any reason to “move on”, but rather moving this idiot to retirement in the Woodside Hospice.

  6. I hate the comments about Democrats. I am a liberal democrat and I think it was a disgusting miscarriage of justice, ethics and humanity to force her to die in this fashion. And, I did not resent Congress getting involved, I don’t care what their agenda was. I don’t think she made her wishes clear enough to assume she wanted to be starved and dehydrated to death nor that she would have wanted her parents to be alienated and tormented in the way they have been. It still keeps me up at night.

I’m sure I’m in the wrong place here but I know the difference between right and wrong.

  7. Thank you, Becky!
You are honest and humane pearson (even though being lib-Dem).
You are thus exempt from any past and possible future sniping at Dems.
We need to join to get that ghoul Greer off the bench. Otherwise, any shyster can use Greer’s ruling as a precedent to kill the next innocent pearson, even easier.

  8. Correction in the above post:
    Delete “pearson”, substitute “person”.

  9. Here is the transcript of Father Pavone’s appearance on Bill O’Rilley’s Factor, April 6:

    An excerpt:
“I was with Terri for three or four hours before she died, right up to about 10 minutes before her death. Now George Felos and Michael Schiavo, they want to say this was a peaceful, gentle, merciful death. Bill, in all my years as priest I have never seen anything so horrifying or agonizing as the way she died.”

  10. Regarding the poll–it has NO relationship to Terri. Being “disabled” makes poll respondents think about someone who is blind or in a wheel chair, being disabled is not being brain dead. Of course people don’t want to starve someone who has awareness, but Terri didn’t. Don’t be fooled by those videos–that was 4 minutes of tape edited from 6 or 7 hours–they just picked out the parts where she seemed to be looking in the right direction.

Don’t you people get it? Terri was NOT there any more. Her body was still going, but SHE was gone. She was brain dead. Her brain showed no electrical activity and her cortex was atrophied.

Have you ever seen a loved one in a similar state? I have–my father–and it was heartbreaking. We had the courage and the sanity to let his body go (just like Tom DeLay did).

And whoever thinks the judges were in contempt of Congress needs to read the Constitution. Things worked exactly the way it says. Ever heard of separation of powers?

    Comment by Dich — April 7, 2005 @ 8:39 pm

  11. Dich,
sorry to hear about your father. I am sure that your family did the right thing. Your family and DeLay’s family were in agreement. No one is judging your decision.
But, Terri’s case is entirely different. Her entire family, 5 of them, wanted to keep her, as she was. They considered her alive. Only 1 person, her husband, wanted here gone.
There is no comparison between your father’s case and Terri.
    Best wishes!
