“Bioethics” Prof Scoffs at Life’s Sacredness
Alta Charo, the Elizabeth S. Wilson - Bascom Professor of Law and Bioethics at the University of Wisconsin Law School, appears to hold the cynical view that conservatives want Terri Schiavo to live simply because it politically helps their abortion position.
Apparently it has not crossed her mind that maybe they want Terri to live because they actually hold the consistent view that innocent human life is morally sacred, regardless of the age or mental capacity of the person.
Check out this quote from NPR’s All Things Considered, March 18th, 2005 (yesterday). You can listen to it here (the excerpted quote starts at about the three minute mark). The reporter is Brian Naylor:
Charo believes that Republican leaders have adopted the Schiavo issue because it dovetails with their opposition to abortion. Alta Charo: “Part of the battle is about trying to get the United States population to view sheer biological life as somehow morally sacred. If you can do it at the end of life, with someone like Terri Schiavo, you have set yourself up to do at the beginning of life when you are talking about an embryo or a three week old fetus.”
