Congress Gets Behind Terri Schiavo. Compromise Reached.

Posted by Taste of Liberty at 5:47 pm. Filed under: General

It looks like the House and Senate may have reached a compromise on legislation which would restore Terri Schiavo’s feeding tube.

From WND

Congress has hammered out a compromise today that will “restore nutrition and hydration to Miss Schiavo,” in the words of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

We’ll have to see how it plays out.

UPDATE: Trey Jackson has the video of the press conference announcing the bill. And Florida Cracker has a link to a parable told by Senator Daniel Webster in Tallahassee:

State Sen. Daniel Webster pleaded for a last-minute reversal Friday, waving a new $100 bill at his colleagues then dropping it on the Senate floor.

“Put it on the floor, smash on it a little bit, now it’s all dirty and soiled and it’s wadded up. You know what? It’s still worth $100,” he said. “Some of our lives are like crisp $100 bills. Some lives are a little crumpled up. Some lives are soiled and it may not be the life that we’d like to have. But there’s life.”

UPDATE: It looks like the bill will initiate and be approved by the House tomorrow (Sunday), be returned to the Senate for approval and then sent on to the President for his signature. It may be Monday or Tuesday before Terri’s tube would be reinserted providing the Democrats don’t try and obstruct passage of the bill.

LIFE AND DEATH TUG OF WAR

Posted by Taste of Liberty at 11:34 am. Filed under: General

From WorldNetDaily.com

Attorney: Terri cried at news…
Claims brain-injured woman said she wants to live

An attorney for Terri Schiavo said the severely brain-injured woman
cried and yelled out that she wants to live after being told today her
life-sustaining feeding tube was about to be removed by court order.

Barbara Weller was in Terri Schiavo’s room at the Woodside Hospice in
Pinellas Park, Fla., when the encounter took place… Weller essentially told Terri Schiavo, “You had better say you want to live or they will kill you. Just say you want to live.”

Schiavo responded with a drawn out, “I-I-I-I-I-I,” then screamed out
“waaaaaaaa” so loudly that a police officer stationed outside the room
came in.

The officer then ordered Weller removed from the room…

The event was witnessed by Terri Schiavo’s sister Suzanne Vitadamo and
Suzanne’s husband Michael.

There’s a lot going on here folks and it seems certain parties don’t want you to know.

This is not a good right-to-die case for the Left. They’ll sink on this one.

Terri Schiavo: Scott Ott’s Take.

Posted by Eric at 8:55 am. Filed under: General

As he does so well, Scott Ott has written a piece of satire that makes some excellent points.

The National Organization for Women (NOW) today held a jubilant news conference to celebrate the latest advance in women’s rights — the right to have your estranged husband choose to end your life.

“First, it was women’s suffrage — the right to vote — then abortion, the right to privacy,” said an unnamed NOW spokesman. “Finally, a man has led the way in freeing us from the antiquated bigotry that has kept our former husbands from choosing a slow, painful death for us.”

Legal experts at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) also praised the “new progressive precedent in contract law.”

“The court has affirmed that a verbal contract where the only witness is one of the contracting parties is legally binding even if that witness has already violated a written contract, in this case a marriage license, verbally affirmed before dozens of witnesses,” said the ACLU expert. “The bias against known contract-breakers is gone. This also gives a more influential voice before the courts to our nation’s incapacitated, comatose and dead citizens. Their wishes can be determined by the words of their beneficiaries without the hassle of documentation or multiple witnesses.”

Boxer Likes Byrd a Lott

Posted by Eric at 7:47 am. Filed under: General

Check out Captain Ed’s summary of Barbara Boxer calling Robert Byrd the “Love of my Life” - and her filibuster flip-flop.

This appears to be bringing flashbacks of Lott’s toast to Strom Thurmond for many people.

UPDATE: Thanks Dawn! :-)

“Bioethics” Prof Scoffs at Life’s Sacredness

Posted by Eric at 7:25 am. Filed under: General

Alta Charo, the Elizabeth S. Wilson - Bascom Professor of Law and Bioethics at the University of Wisconsin Law School, appears to hold the cynical view that conservatives want Terri Schiavo to live simply because it politically helps their abortion position.

Apparently it has not crossed her mind that maybe they want Terri to live because they actually hold the consistent view that innocent human life is morally sacred, regardless of the age or mental capacity of the person.

Check out this quote from NPR’s All Things Considered, March 18th, 2005 (yesterday). You can listen to it here (the excerpted quote starts at about the three minute mark). The reporter is Brian Naylor:

Charo believes that Republican leaders have adopted the Schiavo issue because it dovetails with their opposition to abortion. Alta Charo: “Part of the battle is about trying to get the United States population to view sheer biological life as somehow morally sacred. If you can do it at the end of life, with someone like Terri Schiavo, you have set yourself up to do at the beginning of life when you are talking about an embryo or a three week old fetus.”

Read that quote again.

If you would like to provide her with constructive feedback on why you have “adopted the Terri Shiavo case,” her email address is racharo@wisc.edu.

If you would like to know more about Professor Charo’s views on the sacredness of the beginning of life, you can find them by doing some reading here.
