Abandoning the RNC

Posted by Eric at 12:48 pm. Filed under: General

Last year I generously donated $5 to the RNC. It got me on their mailing list.

But because I have not sent any money in yet this year, check out the letter I got. Whoever the market research firm is that put this letter together, they ought to be fired on the spot.

I don’t want to believe you’ve abandoned the Republican party, but I have to ask … Have you given up?

Our records show we have not received your 2005 Republican Nationall Committee membership contribution.

I am surprised and concerned because I know how generously you have helped in the past …

[I know you’re busy, and it’s been two months…]

But we’ve not heard from you this year — and I hope you haven’t abandoned the Party.

Huh?

Anyway, check it out for yourself.

  1. It’s a post-election year. They expect to lose a significant number of members, as would any party. Having written mass mailing literature in a previous life, I think this is an attempt to get some guilt flowing. And, of course, some money.

  2. It clearly is a guilt motivation thing, but at least with me it backfires. My response to the letter was “They must be paranoid. Why?”

  3. They send out mailings all the time, and word then according to audience. The audience is defined by:

    Amount of last donation
    Number of donations
    Frequency of donations

Among other things (I don’t know specifically).

By giving a puny, first-time donation, you are only worth one to two letters. I’m surprised you didn’t get a follow-up letter after your initial donation, saying ‘Thanks! And pls send us more $$$! Here’s the cause: yadayadayada’

This isn’t your last letter anyway. There’s another one coming 6-18 months down the road when they try to reactivate dormants.

I’d send them a letter of complaint. Let them know how you feel about the tone of the letter. I used to take calls like that all the time when I worked PR. Even better, call them, mention your blog, point them here, and see what they say.

If their message is hitting poorly, they want to know about it.
