Wizbang has a contest going on, interesting terms for groups of things.
e.g. pride of lions, parliament of owls … or maybe… a crack of plumbers, a kerry of waffles
Some of the responses to the contest are a riot. Or at least creative. Check it out.

From U-Wire:
The bill states a person is not 21 years of age until 8 a.m. the next morning and that consuming, possessing, selling and serving alcoholic beverages would be restricted.
Student response?
“People are going to drink excessively even if they have to wait another day,” she said.
I agree. Maybe the legislature should move on to more pressing business.

Here’s a fascinating read from Frank W. Sweet.
About one-third of White Americans are of between two and twenty percent recent African genetic admixture, as measured by the ancestry-informative markers in their DNA.19 This comes to about 74 million Americans. And yet, day-to-day experience teaches that virtually all White Americans look, well, White. Some may look more Mediterranean and others may look more Nordic, but very few White Americans have a distinctively African appearance. How can one reconcile DNA measurements with common experience?

WAPO reports:
Blogs Draw a Blank, Mostly
It’s been the year (or so) of the blog, which is funny because most Americans say they are not familiar with the online sites.
That’s the conclusion of a new CNN-USA Today-Gallup poll, which found that nearly three-quarters of the public — 74 percent — is “not too” or “not at all” familiar with the sites. Blogs (short for “Web logs”) are online journals in which amateur, and sometimes, not-so-amateur, pundits discuss whatever is on their minds, from television shows to political candidates. The remainder of those polled were divided between those who said they were either “somewhat familiar” (19 percent) or “very familiar” (7 percent) with blogs.
Three percent of the respondents said they read blogs every day; 12 percent said they visit them at least a few times a month. Forty-eight percent said they never look at the sites, and 24 percent said they do not have access to the Internet.
NewDonkey thinks it’s telling that it’s only 3%:
But the overall degree of penetration at the moment should perhaps give pause to those who have made quasi-totalitarian claims about the collective importance of blogs and other internet-based political activity to politics in general, and to Democratic politics in particular.
…
While we can argue back and forth about who’s right and who’s wrong, and whose advice should be accepted or rejected, we’ll never be a majority party again if we forget about the 74% of Americans who don’t know a blog from a frog.
On the other hand, my reaction was: Three percent read blogs every day?! That is HUGE. That’s not an insignificant number. Twelve percent do so a few times a month?! That seems like an awful lot to me.
For every 100 people you meet on the streets, twelve have read a blog several times this month? And three do so every day. I would not have expected it to be so high.

From RedNova:
KIBBUTZ KINNERET, Israel — Former Korn guitarist Brian “Head” Welch was baptized Saturday in the Jordan River, just weeks after quitting his band, drug habits and rock-and-roll lifestyle for religion.
…
He said he plans to release more music without the band.
“My songs are God saying things to me, him talking to people. He’s going to use me to heal people and people are going to be drawn to it, just watch, they will be,” he said.

Drudge is splashing “Playgirl Editor-in-Chief Outs Herself - as a Republican”
“Siding with the GOP when you live in the bluest state around is almost like wearing a Boston Red Sox jersey at a New York Yankees’ home game,” says Zipp in the April issue of PLAYGIRL. ”I cannot tell you how many times a person assumed I voted for John Kerry in 2004. Most of the time, I don’t have the heart to tell them, or the energy to discuss my reasons for going red this election year. But this is Playgirl magazine so it’s about time I was the one who bared what’s underneath.”
And she summarizes the Democrat v. Republican thing this way:
“The Democrats of the Sixties were all about making love and not war while a war-loving Republican is a man who would fight, bleed, sacrifice, and die for his country. Could you imagine what that very same man would do for his wife in the bedroom?” asks Zipp.
Is there any correlation between her party affiliation and this?
Five former male employees of Enron may have lost their stock options but they have shown off their other assets for Playgirl Magazine.
The five left nothing undisclosed when they went before the cameras and as payment, Playgirl offered “more money than they made on their stock options”.
Magazine editor Michele Zipp wouldn’t reveal exactly how much the magazine paid the men.
Next issue: “Men of the Blogosphere”

From WFTV, we have a report out of Madison, WI (regarding Question 62):
The Wisconsin hunter and firefighter wants stray cats classified as an “unprotected species” that could be shot by anyone with a small-game license.
Smith welcomes wild birds onto his property, but if he sees a cat, he thinks the “invasive” animal should be considered fair game.
This spawned a new website: Don’t Shoot the Cat.

The AP is reporting on a potential conflict of interest.
Captain Ed summarizes:
Here we have a man who has done more harm to the First Amendment as anyone in the past generation, all the while scolding us on coordination of electoral efforts, and he’s playing a shell game with Cablevision in order to gin up indirect payments to his staff. Davis claims that McCain didn’t solicit the donations, but Davis did; according to his own account, he sought out the donation from Cablevision after hearing that they might be interested in funding The Reform Institute. Coincidentally, McCain starts writing letters and making phone calls on behalf of Cablevision shortly after the first installment gets cashed by Davis and the Reform Institute
Neal Boortz:
If you listen closely, you just might hear the sound of John McCain’s 2008 presidential hopes slipping into the ether. Maybe not entirely…after all, many other Senators have done worse, including The Poodle. At any rate, this bit of scandal seems to involve an area where the saintly John McCain was thought to be untouchable: dirty campaign contributions.
The Yonker’s Citizen:
McCain complains about big money in politics. But he doesn’t see that it’s too bad to accept money from a monopoly in order to give “insider access” to allow the monopolist to testify before Congress.
And the Bandwagon thinks McCain gets free HBO.
UPDATE: Michelle joins the fray. And Captain Ed has more and more. Others too: St. Wendeler, Opaque Lucidity, a skeptical Kilmer and lots more.

Wizbang’s Jay Tea does some creative Google-baiting today with a sort of funny PSA:
Earlier, I heard yet another dumb criminal story on the radio. While I usually enjoy such things, I am getting a little tired of certain themes. So, both as a public service and to increase my own entertainment, I’d like to offer a bit of advice:
Shameless, that Jay.

I ran across a blog today that I’d not seen before. It’s dedicated to photos in the news and there’s some interesting stuff there.
Check out this analysis of the Newsweek cover “photo” of Martha Stewart. Turns out that though the headline is “After Prison, She’s Thinner, Wealthier & Ready for Prime Time” the “thinner” body in the picture is not even hers.
In “damage control” interviews over the past 24 hours, Lynn Staley, assistant managing editor of Newsweek, says she thought it was obvious this image was not a photograph. She backs herself up by referring to the small print “cover credit” on the bottom of the Table of Contents page. (If you can find it, it obliquely cites one credit for a “cover illustration,” and another for a “head shot.”)
One commenter asks:
Is it me or is the body (whoever’s it is) missing everything from the waist down and stuck on a post?
If you look at the picture, it’s a great question.
Now, back to the important things in life…

From the LA Times:
Drug maker Merck & Co. continued to supply infant vaccine containing a mercury-based preservative for two years after declaring that it had eliminated the chemical.
…
Merck continued to supply the preservative-containing version “during the transition period to ensure an adequate supply of vaccine to help protect the nation’s children,” said spokeswoman Mary Elizabeth Blake. She said package labels disclosed which lots of vaccine were preservative-free
