Walmart Skirts the Rules

Posted by Eric at 5:32 pm. Filed under: General

Creative thinking? Or obnoxious bullying?

From the AP:

Wal-Mart is trying a new tactic to skirt
local ordinances limiting the size of its stores.

The company now plans to build two stores side-by-side at a site in Calvert County where plans for a single big store were thwarted by a size limit adopted last year.

Al Sharpton v. Bill Cosby

Posted by Eric at 4:41 pm. Filed under: General

According to this report

The Rev. Al Sharpton is calling for a 90-day ban on radio and TV airplay for any performer who uses violence to settle scores or hype albums.

“There has to be a way to step in and regulate what’s going on with the airwaves and with violence,” Sharpton told the Daily News yesterday. “The airwaves are being used to romanticize urban violence.”

On the other hand, addressing parents, Cosby says…

“I’m looking at you, Detroit. It’s not what they’re doing to us, it’s what you’re not doing,”

Dr. Cosby is right. And maybe Mr. Sharpton should encourage parents to be parents and talk to their kids about the filth emitting from their radio, rather than asking the government to step in and regulate. (Or, to be fair, maybe he too has made personal responsibility an emphasis and I have missed it… if so, send me a link and I’ll post it).

It’s true, check it out.

Werner hopes her situation will improve next year. She plans to attend the Alliance School, a charter high school that will focus on students who feel discriminated against or bullied.

Betsy Hoffman Resigns

Posted by Eric at 3:32 pm. Filed under: General

If you haven’t seen it yet, The Denver Post is reporting that the President of the University of Colorado resigned.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Hoffman said her decision would give her time to help the university resolve several issues, including the fate of [Ward] Churchill

Lots of others are commenting around the web on the issue of her resignation (before or after the fact) and the CU scandals.

Eason Jordan and Giuliana Sgrena.

Who needs match.com?

Sgrena:

“The fact that the Americans don’t want negotiations to free the hostages is known,” Sgrena told Sky TG24 television.

“The fact that they do everything to prevent the adoption of this practice to save the lives of people held hostages, everybody knows that. So I don’t see why I should rule out that I could have been the target.”

Eason:

The Israelis say they’re actually trying to restrict our access to these areas and they say it’s too dangerous for you to be there and my response to that is that it wouldn’t be nearly as dangerous if you didn’t shoot at us when we’re clearly labelled as CNN crews and journalists. And so this must stop, this targeting of the news media both literally and figuratively must come to an end immediately.

UPDATE: Instapundit has lots of links on this.

See Mercury Through March 19th.

Posted by Eric at 9:01 am. Filed under: General

If you’re into “space stuff” like my kids are, this will be a neat opportunity.

It’s prime time for seeing Mercury:

Currently, Mercury is visible about 45 minutes after sunset, very near to the horizon, just to the south (left) of due west. Yet, if your sky is clear and there are no tall obstructions to your view (such as trees or buildings) you should have no trouble in seeing it as a very bright “star” shining with just a trace of a yellowish-orange tinge.

On Friday evening, Mercury will be shining at magnitude –1.1, which means that only one other object in that same evening sky will be brighter: Sirius (the brightest of all stars).

Here is MSNBC’s illustration of where it is located.

Brain-dead but Smiling?

Posted by Eric at 8:58 am. Filed under: General

The Trentonian has an article today that leads in with this statement, as if it were objective reporting.

Terri Schiavo, the brain-dead but smiling woman at the center of America’s debate about euthanasia…

Brain-dead but smiling? What in the world does that mean?

And later in the story, shrouded with doubt by the word “insisted” we read:

While court-ordered doctors have labeled Terri Schiavo permanently vegetative, Schindler [Terri’s brother] insisted he had spoken to speech therapists and doctors who attested to the contrary.

If these editors have not watched the videos, they should. If they have and still write this stuff, shame on them.

In related news, the NRLC is calling on Congress to act.

Representative Dave Weldon of Maryland has announced that he will introduce the Incapacitated Person’s Legal Protection Act on Tuesday, March 8, 2005.

FishBowlDC Joins the Gaggle.

23 year old blogger Garrett M. Graff has been cleared to attend Monday’s press briefing at the White House.

According to this site, Garret Graff, in 1997 built then-Governor Howard Dean’s 1st website and worked on his presidential campaign. I’m not familiar with Mr. Graff and have not followed his press pass quest much, but this is 2005 and he is 23 years old. If he built the governor’s website in 1997, he would have been roughly 15 years old. Pretty cool thing on your resume coming out of High School.
