Abortion Law in South Dakota
The State Affairs Committee unanimously approved HB1249, which would make it a felony to do abortions if Roe v. Wade, the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, is overturned. The bill would allow exceptions in cases where a pregnant woman’s life is at risk.
But what jumped out at me was this quote by Planned Parenthood spokesperson Kate Looby.
Kate Looby of Planned Parenthood said the bill is one of the most extreme measures she has seen. The measure would tie physicians’ hands and ignore women’s ability to make decisions for themselves, she said.
“Making abortion illegal never has and never will stop women from having abortions,” Looby said, urging the committee to reject the bill. [emphasis mine]
By this logic, nothing should be illegal. Let’s substitute a few other activities.
Making murder illegal never has and never will stop people from murdering.
Making theft illegal never has and never will stop people from stealing.
Making speeding illegal never has and never will stop people from speeding.
I wonder if Kate Looby would want to legalize all of these things.
UPDATE (2/22): Looks like I got a commenter riled up with the post above. In one comment, I have been called the following: clever boots, unimportant, stupid, smarmy little bugger, a punter, shallow, angry, and close-minded. Oh, and apparently I engage in “silly little name calling episodes.” :-)
I honestly do not see how that comment in any way adds to a constructive dialogue or in the least bit actually has rational disagreement with my point that “By this logic, nothing should be illegal.” But I figured I would at least point out the irony in calling me names while saying that I’m engaged in name calling (which, as I review the original post, I’m having trouble finding an instance of).

Um, no it doesn’t - and of course you know that - you’re just trying to be a clever boots, now, aren’t you? It’s really simple. I’ll type slowly so you’ll understand.
Lots of people believe it is a good and just thing to permit abortions. Lots and lots and lots, actually. Or, to make it easier for you to understand this concept of “lots”, many more than three. These people believe it so much, consider it to be so much a matter of personal choice, that they will risk criminal sanction to exercise that belief.
This is because they think it’s really important. Eg, very much like what your comments are not.
This makes it difficult to society to decide whether allowing abortions is right or wrong. Yes, very, very difficult. Eg, like how difficult it is to restrain oneself from smacking smarmy little buggers like you across the head with planks when you engage in silly little name calling episodes like this post of yours.
Or. put another way, very unlike how hard it is to decide whether murder, theft and speeding ought to be illegal. All of which is easy. Yes, very, very easy. As in how easy it is to recognize punters like you for what you are - shallow, angry and closed-minded.

Looks like you got ol’ Frank riled up indeed.
But Frank is avoiding the core of the issue. Is abortion terminating a life or is it not? If it is, then Frank has to decide whether terminating a life is okay. And if Frank thinks it’s okay then would he allow it under all circumstances and at any point in the pregnancy up to, and shortly after birth?
And if Frank thinks that terminating a life is okay would he draw the line anywhere? Is there a point at which Frank would say, “No, you cannot take that life.” ?

Thinking a little bit more about good friend Frank’s comments regarding abortion.
One of the key themes to his comments is the idea of passion; “…believe it so much…”, “…really important.” . However passion is not a reasonable determing factor in whether or not the object of that passion is right or wrong, true or false.
History is littered with those who were passionate about something but were dreadfully wrong; a case of misplaced passion. The Nazis come to mind as one, the Islamic terrorists another.
And the misplacement of such passion is not necessarily motivated by malicious intent on the part of many who may subscribe to it. To many it may sound good or right and they get caught up in the wave of the momentum of the movement. Eventually such passion may give way to a mob rule mentality and pity the poor soul who voices objection.
In fairness to Frank, there certainly are times when the issue of life and death is not a mere matter of academic exercise or of some right somewhere. It is the deep and serious struggle of people whose liives are on the line, looking at options, neither of which appear to be good. It is these moments with which most of us can have compassion. But to take those moments and spin them to justify the casual taking of life as though it were no big deal in order to assuage someone’s convenience, is a perversion at best, a lie at worst.

Comment by Hi, I'm a college student born and raised in the great state of South Dakota so naturally I'm taking an interest in this issue. Roe vs. Wade was ground breaking for our nation and to take a step backward is outrageous to me. O'Connor helped take a stand — January 23, 2006 @ 9:34 pm
Great blog on Kate Looby-she has quite a following-so beware of the word attacks. She is a very smart and talented spinster-however there is not much depth as evident in your point about logical thinking-She has an amazing way of getting into the media -but then makes BIG mistakes. Bottom line is this PR gal is overhead on this issue. My question to Kate and her followers would be, Is it worth it? Loosing your family and integrity to fight a loosing battle? I am saddened for Kate, she has isolated herself. She must be a lonely soul!

Kate Looby needs to get off her self-aborbed highhorse and understand that she does NOT represent the majority of women in South Dakota, but only a select few. The rest of us aren’t impressed with her presentation and implication that all women in South Dakota are as ruthless and as lacking in morals as she herself is.

In case you haven’t noticed, people still do murder, people still do steal, people still do speed. Law does not stop such activities and that is why we require laws.
What you can logically take from her statement is that laws show what behaviours are considered unacceptable in a society. Making abortion illegal will not stop abortions from taking place but it does suggest that abortions are considered unacceptable in our society. Which, in my opinion, suggests our society is descending backwards into a misogynistic pit of idiocy.
