9/11 Conspiracy Theories Debunked

Posted by Eric at 11:59 am. Filed under: General

Popular Mechanics does a bit of debunking. It’s interesting reading.

To investigate 16 of the most prevalent claims made by conspiracy theorists, POPULAR MECHANICS assembled a team of nine researchers and reporters who, together with PM editors, consulted more than 70 professionals in fields that form the core content of this magazine, including aviation, engineering and the military.

In the end, we were able to debunk each of these assertions with hard evidence and a healthy dose of common sense. We learned that a few theories are based on something as innocent as a reporting error on that chaotic day. Others are the byproducts of cynical imaginations that aim to inject suspicion and animosity into public debate.

And remember, Howard Dean, the new Chairman of the DNC, came pretty close to giving validity to the idea that Bush knew of 9/11 ahead of time.

“The most interesting theory that I’ve heard so far – which is nothing more than a theory, it can’t be proved – is that he was warned ahead of time by the Saudis,” Dean told a caller to Washington, D.C’s “Diane Rehm Show,” according to a transcript obtained by Opinion Journal.com.

“Now, who knows what the real situation is?” the presidential conspiracy theorist cautioned. He then added, “But the trouble is, by suppressing that kind of information, you lead to those kinds of theories, whether they have any truth to them or not.”

UPDATE: I’ll echo MUSC Tiger’s sentiments. :-)

UPDATE: Interesting…Instapundit has pointed out that Popular Mechanics is now “welcoming” Instapundit, Austin Bay, and Tim Blair (he also had a link) readers. Hey PM! What about The MUSC Tiger? I’m sure we’ve sent at least…2 maybe 3 people your way! How about some recognition?
