I’ve been meaning to blog about this for a few days, just now getting to it.
There is a new law in Illinois which, if I’m reading it right, seems to severely restrict the religious freedoms of churches in its jurisdiction. I’m no legal scholar, but this seems to have huge implications.
WorldNetDaily has some further elaboration and perspective.
There is an opinion piece in the Illinois Leader.
This new law, hailed by liberals as a hallmark of freedom and liberty for homosexuals and transsexuals, is in reality a new tool that will eventually be used to hinder free speech and religious liberty.
And from Michael Bates:
At the bill signing, the gov quoted Jesus, which was ironic. That’s because one obvious group that has lost rights are churches that believe homosexuality is wrong.
If a church doesn’t hire people on the basis of their homosexuality, the church will be in violation of the new law. Some equal rights legislation specifically exempts religious organizations.
But not the bill signed by Blagojevich. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Democrat Senator Carol Ronen of Chicago, one of the law’s principal sponsors, “said churches and religious groups need to be held to the same anti-discrimination standards as the rest of society. ‘If that is their goal, to discriminate against gay people, this law wouldn’t allow them to do that.’”
From Crossmap:
If the new law is allowed to stand, it would represent the civic acceptance of homosexuality, denying public and church opposition to homosexuality as a sin. Illinois is the 15th state to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, but opponents argue that previous state laws have provided an exemption for religious groups.
Joe Farrah adds his thoughts here.

The Shadow of the Olive Tree asks, will this apply to Mosques?
If you’re blogging about this, add a comment and I’ll put your link up here. It seems there ought to be more buzz on this from conservatives everyone concerned about religious freedom and freedom of speech.
