Kevin Shelley Scandal Roundup

Posted by Eric at 5:54 am. Filed under: General

What follows is a summary of the getting-crazier-by-the-day Kevin Shelley Kevin Shelley scandal out in California.

[There are] two state investigations and a federal probe into accusations he accepted campaign contributions from a political ally that had been laundered through a state grant. He’s also been accused of accepting political donations in his state office.

He’s also accused of altering a civil service exam grade and favoritism in hiring, according to the report from the California State Personnel Board, which is here in pdf format.

The Sacramento Bee summarizes:

The state Personnel Board on Tuesday issued a scathing critique of embattled Secretary of State Kevin Shelley, alleging that he oversees an “abusive work environment” and revealing “multiple improprieties” in civil service examination procedures.

And it [the Sacramento Bee] names names.

Although the report did not name any of the workers involved, it was clear that Andrew Lee, the son of a San Francisco businesswoman whose campaign contributions to Shelley are the subject of multiple investigations, was the employee who may have been inappropriately hired.

And there are some harrassment complaints as well.

Shimomura told reporters after the board’s hour-long meeting Tuesday that he also asked the attorney general to investigate the apparent disappearance of two complaints a female employee said she wrote and filed with superiors in her office after Shelley allegedly made crude and sexually suggestive remarks to her in front of other employees.

Lots going on here.

And from the Sacramento Union, a bit about denying military votes:

Now there is a ANOTHER concern brewing involving Kevin Shelley’s reluctance to oversee federal funds for California citizens vote and voice…it seems that Shelley’s office, while busy spending the HAVA funds to spread his name recognition, voter registration for the Democrat Party and paying off political consultants for John Kerry and other Democrat candidates…Shelley HAS NOT fulfilled the HAVA requirement for informing, educating and preparing the vote and ballots of California’s military members serving overseas.

Shelley used federal funds for his personal political desires, but never fulfilled the HAVA requirements for our military members and their right to vote through absentee ballots.

Michelle Malkin has a good round up.
Daniel Weintraub blogged here and here.
Eric Hogue has some more interesting quotes about the investigation that he culled from the Capitol Television News Service here.
And Dan Tokaji weighs in here and calls for Shelley to step down.
