CIA: Take Note

Posted by Eric at 3:09 pm. Filed under: General

It seems the CIA could try this approach. Of course, not knowing anything about Colgate (other than that it’s minty), I have no idea if recruiting a Colgate professor for the CIA might be the harder step than embedding with the terrorists.

Blogger Stats.

Posted by Eric at 3:00 pm. Filed under: General

Wow. Wizbang has some really interesting stats.

For example, who gets more web traffic according to Alexa?

Daily Kos or Rush Limbaugh?
Instapundit or The Weekly Standard?
Power Line or Sean Hannity?
Talking Points Memo or The New Yorker?
Wizbang or The American Prospect?

If you picked the blog in each case, you were right.

Unplug It.

Posted by Eric at 6:35 am. Filed under: General

Katie Couric had a report last night on CNN that once again emphasizes the theme I seem to have hit on this week of the need for responsible involved parents.

Among the quotes in the AP story:

“I think that society is so sexualized from the time these kids are small, they’re quite comfortable,” Couric said.

Couric said sex “needs to be a constant discussion. It’s not one discussion about the birds and the bees and then, ‘Phew, that’s it.’ “

And here’s another, from yesterday: Students Arrested Over ‘Violent’ Stick Figure Drawings.

Violent Stick Figure Drawing

My first thoughts were “where are the parents?” and “would the cops have to lead these kids away in hand cuffs if the parents were doing their jobs?” (Granted, I don’t know the families, and maybe the parents truly are doing their best, those were just my gut reactions).

A [possibly more] relevant question that a friend of mine raised is “where did they get these ideas in the first place?” From their friends? But where did they get the ideas.

We can blame the entertainment industry, Hollywood, and the television all we want… but I submit that it’s not that hard to unplug the TV and solve a LOT of the problems with our children.

Washington “Count Every Vote” Update

Posted by Eric at 6:09 am. Filed under: General

Paul over at Wizbang wonders where the “Count Every Vote” crowd is in the Washington state recount.

The Seattle Times throws lots of numbers ar0und:

The state Republican Party said in court papers filed yesterday that it has found 300 illegal votes and more than 400 that can’t be verified in the governor’s election.

Republicans have identified 240 felons who voted illegally.

He also said the party has identified 44 votes cast under the name of dead people, 10 voters who voted twice in the state and six who voted here and in another state.

Vance claimed the Republicans had found 737 illegal votes, but 437 of those are mishandled provisional ballots.

And remember, Christine Gregoire won by only 129 votes.

Republican Party Chairman Chris Vance says he now has found far more than enough evidence to persuade a judge to nullify the election and call for a rematch between Gregoire and Republican Dino Rossi.

But the Democrats say:

Democrats say that while the election was close, the Republicans’ evidence isn’t enough to nullify the election and Gregoire is the legitimate governor.

Wizbang has a good point. Why don’t they want to count every vote now?

Kevin Shelley Scandal Roundup

Posted by Eric at 5:54 am. Filed under: General

What follows is a summary of the getting-crazier-by-the-day Kevin Shelley Kevin Shelley scandal out in California.

[There are] two state investigations and a federal probe into accusations he accepted campaign contributions from a political ally that had been laundered through a state grant. He’s also been accused of accepting political donations in his state office.

He’s also accused of altering a civil service exam grade and favoritism in hiring, according to the report from the California State Personnel Board, which is here in pdf format.

The Sacramento Bee summarizes:

The state Personnel Board on Tuesday issued a scathing critique of embattled Secretary of State Kevin Shelley, alleging that he oversees an “abusive work environment” and revealing “multiple improprieties” in civil service examination procedures.

And it [the Sacramento Bee] names names.

Although the report did not name any of the workers involved, it was clear that Andrew Lee, the son of a San Francisco businesswoman whose campaign contributions to Shelley are the subject of multiple investigations, was the employee who may have been inappropriately hired.

And there are some harrassment complaints as well.

Shimomura told reporters after the board’s hour-long meeting Tuesday that he also asked the attorney general to investigate the apparent disappearance of two complaints a female employee said she wrote and filed with superiors in her office after Shelley allegedly made crude and sexually suggestive remarks to her in front of other employees.

Lots going on here.

And from the Sacramento Union, a bit about denying military votes:

Now there is a ANOTHER concern brewing involving Kevin Shelley’s reluctance to oversee federal funds for California citizens vote and voice…it seems that Shelley’s office, while busy spending the HAVA funds to spread his name recognition, voter registration for the Democrat Party and paying off political consultants for John Kerry and other Democrat candidates…Shelley HAS NOT fulfilled the HAVA requirement for informing, educating and preparing the vote and ballots of California’s military members serving overseas.

Shelley used federal funds for his personal political desires, but never fulfilled the HAVA requirements for our military members and their right to vote through absentee ballots.

Michelle Malkin has a good round up.
Daniel Weintraub blogged here and here.
Eric Hogue has some more interesting quotes about the investigation that he culled from the Capitol Television News Service here.
And Dan Tokaji weighs in here and calls for Shelley to step down.
