Satanist Beating: Hate Crime?

Posted by Eric at 2:18 pm. Filed under: General

This NYT story is interesting.

I still haven’t figured out what the opposite of a “hate crime” is. If I beat someone up because I hate them I don’t see how it’s different than if I beat them up because I’m having a bad day. Both are wrong.

Equally wrong?

Some commentary here from the left banke, whose blog, suspiciously, looks a lot like mine. Durned default templates. :-)

The $1 Billion Surplus

Posted by Eric at 1:56 pm. Filed under: General

So, what’s the big secret about this news? I haven’t heard it mentioned anywhere in the MSM.

Let’s try a Google news search. At this point, it’s all the little guy, no big media picking this one up.

The ‘Media Party’ is over

Posted by Eric at 11:21 am. Filed under: General

Interesting reading from Fineman.

A political party is dying before our eyes — and I don’t mean the Democrats. I’m talking about the “mainstream media,” which is being destroyed by the opposition (or worse, the casual disdain) of George Bush’s Republican Party; by competition from other news outlets (led by the internet and Fox’s canny Roger Ailes); and by its own fraying journalistic standards. At the height of its power, the AMMP (the American Mainstream Media Party) helped validate the civil rights movement, end a war and oust a power-mad president. But all that is ancient history.

Mosh too late

Eminem regrets releasing anti Bush single late!

A bit earlier and maybe he would have swung the election for Kerry. Yeah, maybe.

When is Deterring Speech “McCarthyism”?

Posted by EW at 10:48 am. Filed under: General

Interesting discussion here from Eugene Volokh.

While I’m on the subject of McCarthyism, if you haven’t read it yet, Treason, by Ann Coulter is worth reading.

Rather needs to be fired. Period.

Posted by Eric at 9:32 am. Filed under: General

Quoting from the report, Rathergate.com emphasizes this quote:

Rather informed the Panel that he still believes the content of the documents is true because “the facts are right on the money,” and that no one had provided persuasive evidence that the documents were not authentic.

There’s not much more to say.

Reuters Corrects.

Posted by Eric at 9:17 am. Filed under: General

Reuters has corrected its story from yesterday, which was blogged about by Michelle Malkin.

(Corrects fifth paragraph to clarify CBS did not describe the documents as false or say CBS was duped.)

It’s great to see bloggers getting results when something erroneous is brought to light.

SpongeBob’s Diversity

Posted by Eric at 9:12 am. Filed under: General

Dawn Eden has an interesting post titled SpongeBob Sings for Diversity.

The “We Are Family” project bringing together the most popular TV cartoon characters to sing about “diversity”—where “diversity” is defined partly as celebrating one’s “sexual identity—sounds similarly detached from kids’ everyday lives. But this time there’s a more sinister turn—it’s a surreptitious Hollywood effort to teach kids to explore homosexuality. Moreover, the flip side of the program’s “tolerance” is gross intolerance of those with differing beliefs.

Worse than Saddam?

Posted by Eric at 5:57 am. Filed under: General

Reuters is so sensitive.

“FORT HOOD, Texas (Reuters) - A former inmate at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison forced by U.S. guards to masturbate in public and piled onto a pyramid of naked men said on Tuesday even Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein did not do such things.”

Humiliating? Yes.
Torture? Questionable.
Worse than Saddam? Well, only if you call being forced on a pile of naked men worse than this.

BAGHDAD — Pictures of dead Iraqis, with their necks slashed, their eyes gouged out and their genitals blackened, fill a bookshelf. Jail cells, with dried blood on the floor and rusted shackles bolted to the walls, line the corridors.

“Saddam did not do such things.” Amazing.
